The majority of martial
arts uniforms consist of three pieces:
A top, bottom and a type of belt. Most traditional martial arts
use a jacket type top, pants and a colored belt to signify rank.
Some varieties, will include, T-shirts or muscle tops, shorts
and uniforms with sashes or no belts.
Most uniforms are loose fitting to allow free and easy movement, without the
fear of being restricted or getting caught up in what you are wearing. Belts
not only signify rank, but also hold the bottom part of the jacket together.
If shirts and shorts are worn instead of traditional uniforms, they are usually
skin tight to help prevent opponents from using their uniform against them. Shirts,
shorts and loose fitting uniforms also help keep the body cool, by allowing air
to circulate over the body.
Uniforms are commonly constructed out of cotton. Cotton is breathable and will
absorb sweat and is very comfortable. It can also be used to create both lightweight
and heavyweight uniforms. Lightweight uniforms are more commonly used with stand
up styles of martial arts. Usually beginners will use lightweight uniforms, because
they are inexpensive and allow someone to begin without breaking the bank.
Heavyweight uniforms are more commonly used by the grappling and throwing arts
and are preferred by serious practitioners of martial arts. Heavyweight uniforms
are resistant to ripping and tearing, usually have reinforced seams, and will
stand up to the heavy wear and tear associated to being thrown and grabbed repeatedly.
Regardless of what type of uniform you select, a good uniform should last for
quite
a
while and be able to handle different types of throwing, stretching and tugging
that
will occur when one practices martial arts.
